A plate heat exchanger consists of a series of stacked parallel metal plates to facilitate the transfer of heat between fluids. This heat transfer can occur in any combination of liquid or gas, through a solid separator that prevents these fluids from coming into direct contact. Heat exchangers require less space and require little to no maintenance. There are many potential use cases for heat exchangers including connectors between chillers, boilers, and cooling towers, pasteurizers or beverage production, and other process engineering applications.
The fluid flows within the space between two adjacent plates that are corrugated to increase the heat transfer area and efficiency. The hot and cold fluids enter through inlet and outlet holes and flow within alternating channels, so that a plate is always in contact with the hot fluid on one side and cold fluid on the other. The number of plates in a single exchanger ranges from just ten to several hundred, so reaching surface exchange areas up to thousands of square meters. These plates can be easily adjusted based on application requirements. By adjusting the number of plates in the heat exchanger, the heat exchange surface area can be adapted. In order to choose the right heat changer, the following parameters must be known:
- Type of working fluids (e.g. oil, water)
- The temperature of each fluid at the inlet points
- The rate of flow for each fluid (G/min or L/min)
